So far she'd trained with the RiverClan leader, Coyotestar, for one whole moon. She loved the life of the apprentice, but wondered how long this mind set would last. After all, the senior apprentices in her Clan all complained about their duties and said that they were as good as any warrior. Obviously not, that's why you're all still apprentices! she thought, her head wandering back to the time, not too long ago, when they had this conversation. Even doing the things that were considered to be 'chores' were still fun to Redpaw. If Coyotestar was busy doing whatever leaders had to do that didn't require their apprentices, Redpaw was off helping the elders. While she cleaned their bedding and replaced it with new feathers and moss or searched for ticks on their pelts, they told her a story. That was the greatest reward. Though she loved training just as much as talking to the elders, it didn't hurt to take a break from Coyotestar to talk with her favorite storyteller, Stormwhisker. She remembered when she first met old gray she-cat and a lot of other cats. Her mother, Honeybird, personally introduced her to most of them. "That's Shrewbark," she told Redpaw once, "See all of those scars on his pelt? They're from getting into so many fights as an apprentice. And over there is Rowanleaf. He's the deputy's brother!" Honeybird was probably her closest kin. When she was younger, if she wasn't in the elders den, she was talking to her. Though lately they were both too busy to say more than a couple words to each other daily. Redpaw remembered when she first left the camp when she hit her sixth moon and how terrified she'd been. Now she strutted around RiverClan's territory, confidence bursting through the seams.
Redpaw was following the dark red, plume-like tail of Coyotestar. It bounced as she stalked, feathery fur waving in front of her, her broad shoulder muscles working as her large paws pressed into the dirt. The young apprentice was proud to have such a powerful mentor. She began to wonder what their training would be for the day. Would they hunt, fight, or swim? Coyotestar hadn't taught her much battle moves, but she wasn't too eager to learn them. That was probably the only thing she wasn't looking forward to when it came to training. Though as much as she wanted to learn, she'd suck it up when the time came. Everyone had to learn how to fight, and she shouldn't be the exception. I have to protect my Clan from outsiders one day!
It was still early morning. The sun just peeked over the horizon, turning the lake, which was behind them, pink and orange. Redpaw cast a glance over her lean shoulders to take in the view for just a moment. It was so beautiful! She wished she could swim in the dappled water, but she didn't know how. She had the large, wide shoulders of the average RiverClan warrior, but her legs were short and thin. No way I can support myself in the water! she thought. A thought raced through her mind- what if she was drowning, and Coyotestar couldn't save her? Hopefully we're not going for a swim. She tried to calm herself with those words, but it was hard to settle down her fluttering heart. When she saw the lake, it made her think of the other Clans. She wanted to meet them at a Gathering, but her shyness seemed to weigh her down. Most of the time she was rather outgoing, but being around a lot of cats made her especially nervous. "What are we doing today, Coyotestar?" Redpaw asked, hoping that her mentor hadn't decided that they should practice one of the things she was fearing.
