Swiftbriar of WindClan

The sun above burned against her pelt as a white she-cat ran across the open moor, her teal eyes flickering as she closed in on her prey. The small cottontail continued to dodge her outstretched paws. She had been chasing the creature for over a minute now and still hadn't quite caught up with it, she was roughly two tail-lengths away now as she turned suddenly to keep in step with it. Taking another deep breath, she continued her chase until the rabbit suddenly leaped forward and into it's hole. Coming to stop, the she-cat let out a sigh and glanced at the hole, it was far too small for her and putting her head in would've been a mouse-brained move. After catching her breath, she quickly sat up right and glanced around the hill side. Swiftbriar could at least go back and pick up the mouse and squirrel she had taken from the forest earlier, but a rabbit would've been nice. Now that she had properly rested, the she-cat stood up and headed down the hill, her ears flattening in disappointment. 

                                                      
                           
Sniffing the air, she decided to try again. It was only sun-high and that meant she could at least try once more. This time the rabbit was close by, nibbling on something, crouching low, she made sure to keep her tail above the ground before suddenly running forward. The rabbit glanced up startled, but it was too late, the white she-cat was suddenly on top of it, and within a matter of moments had nipped it's neck. The rabbit lay limp in her jaws now as she hoisted up her catch. It was a very big rabbit but it would at least feed one of her clan mates.

[Tigerstar]

The sky was bright blue, dappled with fluffy little white clouds. The newleaf sun beat down on the golden tabby tom's back with no mercy, making his tongue loll from his mouth like a dog and his pelt itch like ants were crawling in it. When it was as hot as it was today, it was good to have some shade. Though that was nearly impossible to find in WindClan territory. A few lonely trees grew from the tops of the hills, the branches stretching up like jagged talons to reach the sun and sky. Newleaf was going by fast, which was the complete opposite of the past leaf-bare. Though leaf-bare had been fairly warm and greencough didn't plague WindClan, the leader still disliked the coldest season. As the new leader, he was afraid for his Clan, especially in leaf-bare. Though his first season leading WindClan had gone surprisingly well. Tigerstar had done a complete turn around from the shy, scared, nervous warrior he'd been not too long ago. With his head held high, Tigerstar sniffed the air with a soft, rosy pink nose. Sharp yellow-green eyes glared at the moorland in front of him. Despite being exposed to intense heat, WindClan was perfect for the tom. He was one of the fastest runners in the Clan and probably one of the fastest in all of the Clans. With long, striped orange legs, he could run long distances without tiring. Along with leading his Clan, running and hunting were his favorite things to do.

Tigerstar trotted to the lake shore, which wasn't too far away from where he stood, his beloved home to his back. He couldn't even reach the water before he saw stretches of sticky, liquidy mud in front of him. He'd never seen the water this far receded from the shore, which was why the mud was exposed. A couple fox-lengths away he saw the water, thick, shallow, and brown. It terrified him, and he began to worry for his Clan. How could they survive in the heat without any clean water? And what WindClan cat would want to walk through so much slippery mud just to get it? He also thought how much RiverClan would be effected by the drought- they would certainly be suffering the most, as most of their fresh-kill was caught in the lake and river. They could be trouble later, as the drought worsens in greenleaf. Hopefully it rains soon, and the drought ends. StarClan, please. Turning away from the horrific scene, Tigerstar, trying to forget what he just saw, ran toward the moorland. His spider-like legs were just a blur over the lush green newleaf grass. He figured that he should hunt for the Clan- maybe later he'd collect water for the queens and elders, who'd probably be dying of thirst by now if the apprentices weren't out getting it. This greenleaf will be terrible. Tigerstar slowed down quickly to a stop once he caught scent of another WindClan cat. It was a warrior by the name Swiftbriar. Tigerstar padded a few tail-lengths ahead when he saw her around the curve of the hill, her white pelt and teal eyes gleaming in the afternoon sun. Her haunches were tense as if she were about to leap- that was when he realizing that she was hunting a rabbit a couple paw steps in front of her. Quickly and quietly, the orange tom ducked into a crouch. He wasn't going to hunt her prey, but he wanted to remain unseen if her catch was going to be a success.

He watched the she-cat jump suddenly, springing on the rabbit gracefully and biting it's neck. As it went limp in her jaws, Tigerstar padded up to the younger cat and meowed, dipping his head in greeting, "Great catch, Swiftbriar!"  A purr rumbled in his chest as he sat down next to her catch. "That's a huge rabbit! That will feed the queens or elders for sure." Tigerstar paused, wrapping his tail around his soft white paws, a little unsure about asking his question, but he figured that it would be rabbit-brained not to. "I was planning on hunting myself, actually. Did you want to hunt with me? If you'd rather hunt alone, that's fine too." A hunting pair was better than hunting solo, not to mention more prey could be brought back home, so he hoped that Swiftbriar agreed to his idea.

The weight of the rabbit was ignored as the she-cat turned to see who was speaking. To her surprise it was Tigerstar who was speaking such words of praise. Putting the rabbit down at her paws, she nodded. "Thanks."  she murmured modestly, glancing quietly at the rabbit for a moment with a look of satisfaction. Her teal gaze flickered for a moment as her ears perked up in response to his question. "Oh why not, I'm sure we can catch more as a team." she answered lightly before picking up her rabbit and padding a few tail-lengths away to bury it. After it was covered the she-cat turned around and headed back towards Tigerstar. She was a bit nervous honestly, she had never hunted with the leader before, so she hoped she didn't make a fool of herself.  Her was a bit stiff as well but she had grown used to it by now. It wouldn't hinder her until the evening, since it routinely grew sore during that time. The she-cat's whiskers twitched slightly as she sniffed the air, allowing her jaw to part to taste it as well. There was bound to be more thirsty rabbits out there or at least a mouse or two.  Her eyes were trained on the horizon as she tried to find something to hunt. So far she had only came upon a few stale scents, one she recognized to be the rabbit she had missed out on earlier. Glancing back at the leader, she waited to see if he caught wind of anything. --- Word Count: 260 Tag: Tigerstar

[Tigerstar]

The golden tabby tom hoped that he hadn't offended or frightened the young warrior by asking her to hunt with him. He knew that hunting with the leader was a little intimidating from personal experience- after all, the former leader of WindClan, Froststar, had been his mentor. If that wasn't awkward, at least at first, he didn't know what was. But over time, the amber-eyed white tom had become his best friend, despite the huge age difference. Thinking about his mentor made him remember his former apprentice, Frostpaw, who was also his daughter. You were supposed to protect her, rabbit-brain. Where were you when that rogue attacked and killed her? You promised Froststar you would look after her- now it looks like he can do it himself. He was still upset that Frostpaw had been murdered in cold-blood, that poor little cat. Two moons had passed since that fatal tragedy. Another warrior- the name Tigerstar doesn't remember exactly- had found her body and brought it back to camp with him. Frostpaw was like a daughter to him. Because of her, he couldn't bring himself to accept another apprentice. Not yet. He knew that Frostpaw wouldn't want him to feel sorry for her. Once a happy-go-lucky, kit-loving apprentice, she was probably up in StarClan entertaining all of the cats who had died as kits. Tigerstar shook his head lightly, making all thoughts of Froststar and Frostpaw evaporate like morning dew under a hot afternoon sun.

 "Okay, thanks," Tigerstar meowed a little absent-mindlessly. He noticed that Swiftbriar had already buried her huge rabbit beneath the dry, dusty dirt. Tigerstar watched as the white warrior turned and sniffed the air, parting her jaws to catch the scent of rabbit or mouse. The ginger tom copied her posture, his nose high in the air, mouth opened slightly. Most of the scents he tasted were stale and from the rabbit Swiftbriar just caught. As Tigerstar looked over at the heather, which was rustling in the breeze, he said quietly, "Maybe we should move to a different spot on the moorland? There doesn't seem to be very much here- unless you smelled something?" Tigerstar didn't exactly have the best nose in the Clan, so he wouldn't be surprised if Swiftbriar had scented prey that he couldn't. The tom decided that they should move anyway- closer to the water or to a tree, where an animal would likely be getting a drink or resting in the shade. Tigerstar pinned his ears onto the back of his head, lowering his body to the ground like snake, his belly brushing against the grass as he stalked forward. He kept his tail low, but made sure it didn't brush against the dry heather.

Tigerstar began to climb up the hill that was closest to them. He knew that there were a couple trees at the top. Walking slowly as to not disturb the long grass, Tigerstar was constantly tasting the air, trying to catch the scent of prey. He would delivery a rabbit, if they managed to catch one, to the queens- they would certainly enjoy a large one, like the one Swiftbriar managed to catch. Hopefully we can find another big one like that. The Clan will feast tonight! With a quiet purr, Tigerstar suddenly caught the scent that he had been looking for- rabbit! It was very fresh too. Following the scent the rest of the way uphill, Tigerstar whispered, "I think I found something."  He saw the thin trees ahead of him, luscious green leaves swaying in the warm breeze. Beneath them was a dark hole, which was where the rabbit scent was coming from. What they had to do was sit and wait for it to come out or go in. Going in isn't such a good idea. Rabbits aren't that dumb- they have many exits in their burrows. There could also be a cave-in while one of us are down there. No, it wold be better to sit and wait for it to come out, where we can ambush it. Laying himself down in the tall grass, Tigerstar decided to tell Swiftbriar his plan, "I think I have an idea. We can both wait for the rabbit to come out of it's burrow, and when it comes out, we can ambush it. I think one of us should wait to the left of the hole and the other to the right." He pointed to the places where they should lay and wait with the tip of his orange striped tail. "Does that sound okay with you, Swiftbriar?"
